OSO NEGRO BLENDS LIST
Fresh Tracks / The Road Rider (winter name) / (summer name) The darkest of our lighter blends, the Fresh Tracks is a colourful, active blend with a bright, smooth edge. Fully organic, it’s one half Central and South American, one quarter Sumatran, and one quarter Ethiopian. Organic.
The Light Organic Blend A mild, gently roasted mix of 2/3 Central & South American beans and 1/3 Indonesian beans. The Central-South American beans give it body, and the Indonesian round it off with a smooth sweetness. (A note: the lighter the roast, the sharper a bean will taste when it’s made as espresso). Organic.
The Silver Spoon Fuller-bodied than the Light Organic, and a little darker. It’s a combination of three-quarters Central & South American beans, one-quarter Indonesian. Organic.
The Low Acid Blend Very smooth and mild with a clean finish. A mix of Sumatran, Peruvian, and Mexican beans. It’s also organic, fairly traded, and shade-grown.
Simply Sustainable An organic, fairly traded blend of hearty Nicaraguan, mild Mexican, and slightly sharper Guatemalan beans at a variety of roasts (but overall, a medium roast). The Simply tastes familiar to many people because so many of the available beans on the market come from the Central/South American region. However, it lacks the sweetness associated with Indonesian beans and the zest of African coffee.
P&H’s Addiction A “Mocha-Java” blend, meaning half African (Mocha, named for the Yemeni port of Mocha)and half Indonesian (after the Indonesian island of Java). P&H is a nutty, flavorful roast. Organic
Selkirk Blend The original Oso blend, representing the three main coffee-growing regions of the world (that’s 1/3 zesty African, 1/3 smooth Indonesian, and 1/3 full-bodied Central/ South American). It’s generally well-rounded with a bit of Ethiopian sharpness. Organic
Full Organic Blend Rich, full-bodied, and safe-if you’re buying for someone else and don’t want to get something too risqué.
The Meteor Blend The house coffee of the old Meteor Pizza in Kaslo, BC. An organic, fairly traded blend of Central American beans rounded out with Sumatran. It’s very similar to the Full Organic Blend & the Deeply Organic in content, & it’s right between them in terms of roast (medium dark).
The Red Sea Blend Lively and in-your-face-a spicy mix of beans grown in Ethiopia and Yemen.
Purcell Blend Full and mellow; lots of buttery Sumatran smoothness, some Central American body, and a little jet of Ethiopian zest. Another good coffee to buy for a dinner party or gift, especially if you don’t know what people like. Organic
The Mudshark Organic with a complex mix of flavours (it’s a combination of Central American—mainly Cuban—Ethiopian, and Sumatran beans). It has sweet notes and a hint of cinnamon and cardamom in its aftertaste; it’s smoky, but not heavy. A good latté/ cappuccino blend.
The Raleigh Blend Sweet, smooth, and seductive…that’s sweet, smooth Sulawesi + pungent Ethiopian + exotic and flowery Yemen.
Deeply Organic Full-bodied, rich, and hearty. One of our most popular blends.
The Arabian Knight Deep & spicy: tasty, zingy Red Sea offset with mild, full-bodied beans from Guatemala and Nicaragua.
Heart of Darkness 100% African, it’s a zingy, zesty coffee with lots of taste and less body than any of our other blends. Although we temper the zing with earthy Ugandan beans, it’s definitely not for people who want full-bodied, Columbian-style coffee.
Mountain Caribou Awareness Blend Full and mellow; lots of buttery Sumatran smoothness, some Central American body, and a little jet of Ethiopian zest. Another good coffee to buy for a dinner party or gift-especially if you don’t know what people like. Created to raise awareness of the plight of the Purcell areas endangered caribou herd. Organic
Messy Room Blend Charming, diverse, and bold; A delicious blend of chocolately Bolivian Peaberries, rich mocha from Yemen, and buttery, smooth Celebes. A nice full cup!
Simply Sustainable, Darker Roast A dark version of our organic, fair-trade blend (hearty Nicaraguan, mild Mexican, and slightly sharper Guatemalan beans at a variety of roasts). The Simply tastes familiar to many people because so many of the available beans on the market come from the Central/South American region. However, it lacks the sweetness associated with Indonesian beans and the zest of African coffee.
Espresso Blend A darker version of Oso’s original Selkirk Blend (that’s 1/3 zesty African, 1/3 smooth Indonesian, and 1/3 full-bodied Central/ South American). Well-rounded with an Ethiopian edge. Organic.
A Note on Espresso Beans People often ask us for a specific espresso blend. We do offer The Espresso Blend, but you can make espresso with any type of roast or blend. It’s the brewing method—steam forced through very finely ground beans—that creates thick, concentrated espresso coffee. On the West Coast of North America, people generally prefer dark-roasted beans for espresso; in Eastern North America, and also in many European countries, lighter roasts are more common. We suggest using your favourite beans, whether they’re light, dark, or in the middle. Prince of Darkness Very dark and loud with a hint of spiciness. Full-bodied Central American, a handful of spicy Ethiopian, and a snicker of crisp, light, Centrals. The Prince & the Princess are equally dark. Organic Princess of Darkness Very dark, but sweeter and smoother than the Prince. Full-bodied Columbian Supremo and sweet, yummy Sulawesi. Organic
Decaf beans are too fragile to withstand very dark roasts, although we can take Natural Processed and Royal Select beans somewhat darker if you make a special order with our roastery (please note, though, that the flavour may suffer). Decaf beans often look dark, but that’s the result of the decaffeination process, not of the roast level. The beans in our decaf blends will vary according to market availability. Royal Select Decaf So good it’s hard to believe you’re drinking decaf. Royal Select is decaffeinated through a natural water process that has the highest possible flavour retention available in decaf beans. Swiss Water Decaf Swiss Water Decaf is decaffeinated with carbon and water, and it’s less flavourful than the Natural Process. On the plus side, our SH2O Decaf beans are organic.
